Frequently asked questions
Key Largo snorkeling is arguably the best in the Florida Keys! I've even written a blog post about why our reefs are better. For one reason, our reefs sit closer to the the deeper Atlantic shelf, where the waters are steadier, cooler, and more nutrient-rich--basically a spa for corals. In addition, for millions of years the longest island of the Keys--Key Largo--has served as a guardian, buffering and protecting the reefs from freshwater intrusion from Florida Bay.
It's not really possible to snorkel the coral reefs without a boat! Our coral reefs parallel the coastline several miles offshore and are not accessible without a one. The good news is there are plenty of quality tour operators from affordable large group vessels to smaller private charters like ourselves. If you choose to rent a boat just make sure you follow the charts--we aren't considered the shipwreck capital for nothing!
Large group tour boats are much larger and can have 50 or more fellow snorkelers. They are more affordable for families of 4 or less. However, you often are charged extra for the snorkel gear. The transit time is slightly longer due to the maneuverability of a larger vessel, and your time in-the-water is slightly shorter due to the number of snorkelers queueing to be launched. Most all visit one reef, at the Captain's discretion. And worse yet, if you don't have your sea legs on, there is no turning back!
Private snorkeling Key Largo reefs is a better experience for your family's holiday. A boat charter Key Largo hosts only your family--usually from 2 to 6 guests (and can often be the same price as the group tours per person for larger families). All snorkel gear is included as well as other amenities such as water, ice, towels or sunblock. In addition private charters are much more customizable. Visit multiple reefs or mix it up with a stop at our beautiful sandbar. Most importantly the day is yours to decide--you pick the destinations and how long you explore each one.
Yes it's highly advisable to have some swimming skills for snorkeling Key Largo reefs. The snorkeling spots are a few miles offshore and although shallow, there is no place to stand without harming coral. Although calm conditions can allow for less experienced swimmers to still enjoy snorkeling, you must be able to tread water. We have plenty of buoyancy aids to choose from.
Coral reefs are several miles offshore so although shallow they are surrounded by deeper water and highly prone to surrounding weather conditions. Wave height can range from flat calm to several feet, with the "safe" zone (not necessarily comfortable for some) being 1 to 3 ft. 1 ft is good for any swimmers in good health. 2 ft is best for swimmers with some snorkeling experience. 2+ ft is only for advanced swimmers/snorkelers. Tours are cancelled at 3 ft seas.
We visit North Dry Rocks (home of the Christ of the Deep statue), Grecian Rocks, Cannon Patch, White Bank, and Molasses. Each has their own unique characteristics and therefore trips can easily be tailored to the family's needs. Do you have another Key Largo reef in mind? We are completely customizable so just ask away.
